Simple Term for a Broad Category.

An article by Valeria Li called “Cuteness I: How Feeling Fuzzy Helps Your Mind” is about how humans perceive cuteness. While the term is commonly used for something that is visually pleasing it has a deeper meaning. Something that is "cute" has a greater effect on the human mind than some might realize.

This article discusses the psychological happenings of when a person sees something cute. Li states, "Cuteness, in general, is connected to the release of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters responsible for feelings of elation and satisfaction. Additionally, cuteness triggers activation of brain areas related to reward processing, which are also triggered during other rewarding events such as receiving food (Stavropoulos & Alba, 2018)." Meaning that the brain releases these hormones and that in turn affects how the person acts. Another study showed then when seeing something cute a person's motor skills increase. Babies are used as an example, their cuteness acts as a motivator to the adult mind to care for it. It is like a built-in survival instinct. It is also discussed about how the brains reward system is also triggered when viewing something cute. Being rewarded helps motivate our bodies to carry out important tasks, so when that part of the brain is stimulated activity rates go up.

Seeing something labeled as cute, can be an animal or child and while it is enjoyable to view people do not truly realize the effect it is having on them psychologically. Finding something cute is a primitive response that we adapted with and will continue to have. It is a natural survival response. You would think such a complex category would have a more complex name. Especially with it being such a powerful motivator but labeling it as cute will have to do.
