My Reflection of Learning
English 101 has definitely been a different experience for me. It was the most challenging class I had this semester, but I appreciate how it was organized. At the beginning of the semester when I got the syllabus it was not misleading. Everything was well organized, and I was prepared for the oncoming workload.
The blog page was a huge adjustment for me. I enjoyed the weekly writing and reading all of the articles that were provided. I feel like where I was writing so much, my ability to just sit down and write improved. My typing skills were very boosted, I taught myself how to type without looking at my keyboard which I thought was a huge flex. My abilities to research and turn my research into a well-formed essay were tested many times and I realized it was an area I needed to improve in, but the multitude of assignments gave me plenty of practice. I hope to continue to better my writing, I know there is always room for improvement. This course really developed my ability to scan a text and pick apart what was needed for research. I could absorb more information at a quicker rate with this skill and that it very helpful when you are pressed for time with assignments that are piling up.
I loved the Apple Barrel. The variety it provided broadened my views. One moment I would be reading a fictional horror blog then I would be educated about tomatoes in the next. The variety kept it from being dull. I also really appreciated the addition of poems and videos. I used those for when I was in a rush to write. They were easier for me to digest then a full article. I sometimes find it hard to sit down and read. The motivation just really isn't there for me and I was worried that my writings would appear rushed or lazy, I am sure a few did. I am glad the blog posts only had to be 250 words. That limit (even thought we were told to view it as a starting point) was my best friend this entire semester.
This course was compatible with my other classes this semester. The constant writing made it easier to knock term papers out in a few hours. The biggest help was with my report writing course. Everything had to be chronological, we had to review research and compile it into a clear, straightforward, organized report. The research writing that was done in this course really made it routine to write reports. I feel like I didn't struggle when having to write. Everything felt like a habit, because I had done it so much.
I hope I continue to use the skills I developed in this course in future courses. I feel prepared for all my future courses that should involve writing or research. For my first college English class I am relieved to have had a good first experience.
