Self-Made Leader
An article by Ryan Dulaney called "Napoleon the Unlikely Emperor" is about how a man born in Corsica to a position of poverty became the French Emperor, and well-known war general.
Napoleon had a natural talent when it came to strategy. He spent his entire life working to climb the ranks in the French army. The economy at the time was opening doors to the opportunities and chances he needed to succeed. After the French Revolution the new monarch had murdered over 40,000 people with no good reason for the killings. Then the monarch himself was beheaded, so the nation was indeed hurting. Napoleon saw his chance and the young military leader took it to start climbing. While he was in power Napoleon changed many in place customs, for example the class-based customs. This meant young men born from money were naturally accepted into the military. By doing away with this old tradition he increased the size of the military and organized it so it could reach its full lethal potential. He came to rule all of Europe and be called "the greatest military commander of all time" by his friends and allies. However, Napoleon wasn't only concerned with his new military and war, "Napoleon established four levels of public schooling, as well as the Imperial University" (Dulaney). He spread his gift of intelligence to the commoners of France by establishing these schools, and this boosted his popularity with his constituents. His time ended when he was finally beat in battle and banished to an island. He did not leave so easily because he escaped and reclaimed his crown for a short period of time before eventually being bested again and banished permanently to a small island in the Atlantic where he passed.
Overall, Napoleon used his time as emperor wisely. He was strategic and incredibly intelligent. Even after his time passed his self-made name and image is still known and taught to this day. He will forever be known as the best self-made leader of France.
