Floating Wonders
An article by Zio Baritaux called "The Enchanting Realm of Water Lilies and Lotuses" is about the art and storytelling derived from water lilies, lotuses, and lily pads. These plants are found naturally in overgrown, wild ponds that are murky and not appealing to the average person. Surrounded by dark algae ridden water and sour mud, these plants provide a habitat to small fish and amphibians. The leafy pads improve the water quality making a livable freshwater habitat. However, for artists these plants are way more than just small habitat providers.
Water lilies and lotuses have inspired folklore such as sirens who resides in the dark water. The dark water is seen as uncertain and dangerous, and the leafy covering just adds to that aesthetic. The author explains what about the plants sparks interest, she states "What is it about water lilies and lotuses that pull at the edges of our imagination? Perhaps it's how these delicate blooms rise from ominous origins, their beauty intensified by the darkness by when they emerge" (Baritaux). The contrast of the brightness of the plant against the dark water has been displayed by many photographers that captures the theme perfectly. In the article a few photographers are recognized for their photos of water lilies and what they mean. Some are self-reflections while others are meant to be unsettling. The diversity of the interpretations of this aquatic plant is what makes it so alluring. The gorgeous bloom having the possibility to hold so many different meanings make it truly unique, then you add its natural capabilities, and it enhances it even more.
The diversity of these gorgeous plants will never fail to amaze me. People have made so many different arts from one common plant such as paintings, jewelry, perfumes, and photographs. Their habitat they create, and the contrast of the vibrant plant against the dark waters and undergrowth makes them stand out on their own without the help of an artist or photographer capturing them in their own style. These plants are truly special for many reasons.
